Volvo's most powerful Flexifuel engine gets higher performance and lower fuel consumption

Volvo Cars' most powerful E85 engine is now receiving a vitamin supplement in the form of 30 fresh horsepower and an additional 40 Newton metres of torque.

The five-cylinder 2.5-litre Flexifuel engine, the 2.5FT, produces 231 hp (170 kW) and 340 Nm of torque.

At the same time, Volvo's engine experts have succeeded to cutting fuel consumption by between five and six percent depending on transmission.

"This technical advance shows that we can give buyers of our larger cars an attractive combination of enhanced driving pleasure and better environmental properties. Few, if any, of our competitors can match our ever-wider and more efficient green-car model range," says Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice President, Product Development at Volvo Cars. He adds:

"The new 2.5FT variants will be a particularly attractive choice for company car customers. Since the hike in torque gives far better pulling power, driveability in both the Volvo S80 and Volvo V70 gets a real boost. At the same time, fuel economy is noticeably better. Fuel consumption will drop most significantly among cars that cover long distances on the highway and motorway."

Available from June 2009

The upgraded 2.5FT engine will reach the market in the Volvo S80 and Volvo V70 in June 2009. Both variants are available with a choice of manual or automatic transmission.

Fuel consumption (EU, mixed driving cycle on petrol) for the upgraded 2.5FT is 8.8 l/100 km (V70) and 8.6 l/100 km (S80) with manual transmission, and 9.7 l/100 km (V70) and 9.6 l/100 km (S80) with automatic transmission.

This is an improvement of about 5 percent for the manual versions and almost 6 percent for cars with automatic transmission.

When running on E85, fuel consumption increases by about 30 percent since bioethanol contains less energy. The exact difference depends on factors such as driving style, ambient temperature and variations in fuel specification.

Higher boost pressure and lower engine revs

The increase in the 2.5FT engine's torque and power output was made possible by adopting new software that raises the turbocharger's boost pressure.

Fuel economy has been improved by cutting engine revs in specific driving conditions.

In cars with manual transmission, this takes place by fitting a "longer" gear set, that is to say an increased span between first and sixth gear. In this way, fifth gear has the same ratio as the previous sixth gear, while sixth is now a pure overdrive ratio.

In the automatic version, the reduction in fuel consumption has been achieved with a new gearchanging program that changes up earlier at lower engine revs.

One of the most extensive ranges of E85 models

Volvo Cars has one of the car world's broadest ranges of Flexifuel models. All told five models - the Volvo C30, S40, V50, V70 and S80 - can be specified with one or a choice of two E85 engines.

In addition to the turbocharged 2.5FT engine, both the Volvo V70 and the S80 have since the end of 2007 been available with a four-cylinder 2-litre Flexifuel variant (2.0F) producing 145 hp (107 kW) and offering 185 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption (EU, mixed driving cycle on petrol) is 8.6 l/100 km (V70 2.0F) and 8.3 l/100 km (S80 2.0F).

The Flexifuel variants of the Volvo S40, V50 and C30 have a four-cylinder 1.8-litre engine (1.8F) that produces 125 hp (92 kW) and torque of 165 Nm. For these models, the fuel consumption (EU, mixed driving cycle on petrol) is 7.3 l/100 km (C30 1.8F) and 7.4 l/100 km (S40 1.8F and V50 1.8F).

Volvo S60 Concept awarded "Most beautiful concept car" by German Auto Bild magazine

Europe has voted: about 200,000 Auto Bild readers from 27 countries have selected the most beautiful vehicles for 2009 in five categories. The Volvo S60 Concept won over 28 renowned competitors in the category of Concept Cars. The voting for the Auto Bild Design Award was expanded for the first time to Europe-wide scope this year. Votes were submitted by fax, telephone and Internet.

"We are proud that the daring and exciting design of the Volvo S60 Concept has been honoured with such a significant design award at a European level. This is confirmation of our strong belief that we will be offering an extraordinarily attractive alternative in the highly competitive medium premium segment when the new Volvo S60 is launched on the market in 2010," says Thomas Viehweg, managing director of Volvo Car Germany GmbH.

The Volvo S60 Concept was presented to the world public for the first time at the Motor Show in Detroit in January 2009 and opens a new design chapter in the 80-year history of the company. Completely in harmony with the principles of world-famous Scandinavian design, the exterior creates an attractive mix with the coupé-inspired silhouette and the sporty accents. Classic Volvo design elements such as the V-shaped bonnet and the striking shoulders are as much a part of the amazing study as the completely new design elements. These elements include the lean and trim window area graphics and the doors which glide, parallel to the sides of the vehicles, all the way back to the rear wheels at the push of a button. The interior is visually dominated by the glass centre console which flows in a gentle wave from the instrument panel to the back seats.

The Auto Bild Design Award is presented every year by the motoring magazine with the highest circulation in Europe. The Volvo C30 won the Auto Bild Design Award in 2006 as the most beautiful compact car model.

Hai sa dau si eu o mana de ajutor la acest topic:

Volvo si-a unit fortele cu furnizorul de energie suedez Vatenfall pentru a da nastere in 2012 unui hibrid diesel de serie. Pana atunci testele vor fi efectuate pe trei prototipuri V70 cu tren de rulare diesel-electric.

Volvo incearca sa patrunda in urmatorii ani pe piata vehiculelor hibride. Suedezii isi doresc lansarea unui diesel-electric in versiune de serie pana in 2012, drept pentru care si-au unit fortele cu conationalii de la Vatenfall, un furnizor local de energie electrica cu care constructorul auto colaboreaza inca din 2007.

Volvo a facut deja primul pas in domeniul hibridelor alimentate de la priza odata cu lansarea a trei prototipuri V70 cu un tren de rulare diesel-electric. Constructorul va incerca astfel sa obtina informatii despre obiceiurile soferului obisnuit, despre incarcarea masinii si despre stilul de sofat. De cealalata parte, Vatenfall va testa diferite solutii de incarcare rapida in statii de alimentare, in locuri publice si in interiorul caselor.

Prototipurile lansate de Volvo sunt propulsate de un motor diesel frontal, capabil sa ruleze si cu ajutorul altor combustibili alternativi, completat de un motor electric posterior, alimentat de un set de baterii litiu-ion. In acest moment, alimentarea se poate face de la o priza normala, durata de incarcare fiind estimata la aproximativ cinci ore. Bateriile se pot incarca si in timpul rularii multumita sistemului de recuperare a energiei eliberate la franare.

Desi testeaza in prezent tehnologia descrisa mai sus, Volvo a anuntat ca primul sau hibrid de serie, programat pentru 2012, va adopta un tren de rulare putin modificat, inspirat de cel folosit astazi. Potrivit primelor estimari interne, hibridele alimentate de la priza, produse in serie, vor avea un pret mai mare decat cel al modelelor propulsate de dieseluri conventionale. Economia de combustibil si puterea oferita de noile produse Volvo vor motiva insa clientii sa cumpere vehicule hibride.

Stephen Odell, presedinte si CEO al grupului Volvo, a declarat ca dezvoltarea unui diesel-hibrid este un pas foarte important pentru constructorul premium. In plus, "colaboararea cu Vatenfall ne ofera posibilitatea de a livra clientilor nostri vehicule cu un impact mai mic asupra mediului inconjurator."

Intr-o stire de ultima ora, Comisia Europeana a avizat imprumutul pe care statul suedez il va acorda companiei in valoarea de 500 milioane de euro, pentru dezvoltarea de motoare hibride.

Un fan al marcii Volvo a fotografiat versiunea facelift a lui C70. Modelul era pregatit pentru o sedinta foto oficiala, organizata in Barcelona.

Un membru al forumului pasionatilor Volvo a reusit sa surprinda primele imagini cu facelift-ul modelului C70, chiar inainte de sedinta foto oficiala. Desi imaginile sunt surprinse cu telefonul mobil, putem observa principalele trasaturi stilistice ale acestui model. Noul Volvo C70 are un design inspirat din aspectul lui S60 Concept.

Principala schimbare a design-ului lui C70 apare la nivelul partii frontale. Caladrul formeaza un corp comun cu capota, care se diferentiaza apoi de aripi si de bara de protectie fata. Blocurile optice sunt montate pe aripi si au o forma alungita, pe cand masca frontala este preluata direct de la S60 Concept.

Spatele acestui model a fost si el revizuit, numele Volvo ocupand acum un loc de cinste pe portbagajul lui C70. Stopurile au fost si ele schimbate, alaturi de bara de protectie spate. Avand in vedere ca Volvo a organizat deja prima sedinta foto oficiala cu acest model, producatorul suedez ar trebui sa dezvaluie noul C70 in curand.

Ford Engineers Strap Giant Water Cannon To Volvo

Ford engineers have rigged a giant water cannon to a Volvo V70R to test effects of a side-impact crash without the crash. Better news? Ben's trying out this Carpocalypse-level technology as we speak. More below.

Using a Martin Engineering Hurricane Cannon, the test driver can pilot the car as normal and, with the push of a button, simulate the force of a car striking the back of the car. They then take the test data back, plug it into the computer, and devise new ways to tweak the stability control.

Nu-i atat de rea, spatele aduce putin cu Chrysler C300, oricum e ceva nou gandindu-ne ca de ani buni pe segmentul asta nu s-a mai scos nimic.

Ah nu prea cred că acel design provine dela Volvo. Noile maÅŸini au un aspect mai dinamic de exemplu XC60 ÅŸi C30, nu cred ca Volvo va reveni la un design mai demodat, parerea mea  ;D S40 ÅŸi V50 au fost schimbate să arate mai bine ÅŸi mai dinamic ca cele două modele să intre pe o piaÅ£ă mai largă nu cred că la S60 vor renunÅ£a la clienÅ£ii mai tineri. Sper să nu renunÅ£e  :D

Iar modelul de sus parcă provine din '98-'99, nu ÅŸtiu :) dar nu arată prea bine.

Am găsit ÅŸi eu o imagine cred că noul S60 va fii mai aproape de aceasta.

Asta este daca omul nu are timp să caute  :D din păcate. ÃŽmi cer scuze.

Dar am aflat între timp că imaginea de sus este una făcută în (probabil) photoshop. Chiar pe forum de unde este luată poza scrie că este un chop, adică o imagine compusă din mai multe poze. Nu este o maÅŸină concepută de Volvo.

Geely to buy Volvo from Ford

GEELY Automobile Holdings has reached a preliminary agreement with Ford Motor Co to purchase its Volvo unit and Geely plans to produce a new Volvo model in Guangzhou Province, according to media reports yesterday.

The Geely acquisition, following that of another firm's earlier bid to purchase a foreign brand, is yet another opportunity for domestic car makers to expand into the global market.

China's Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co announced recently it was to acquire General Motors Corp's Hummer brand.

Zhejiang Province-based Geely aims to purchase Volvo and build a production line for the Volvo XC90 in Guangzhou Province's Dongguan City, the National Business Daily reported yesterday.

"It's the right time for Chinese firms to make overseas acquisition during the slowdown in the economy," said Jia Xinguang, chief analyst with the Chinese National Automotive Industry Consulting and Development Corp.

The value of the deal is not known but Volvo, which was bought by Ford for US$6.49 billion, won't be sold for less than US$3 billion, according to Jia. Geely couldn't be contacted for comment yesterday.

Representatives of Geely, one of China's biggest private auto makers, have already visited Volvo's headquarters, industry sources told Shanghai Daily.

The purchase will help Geely expand into the medium and high-level markets, Jia said.

Compared to American brands, European brands are better known by Chinese consumers, he said.

Geely sold 101,171 units between January and May, a jump of 57.8 percent year on year, because it had tapped into the second and third-tier cities after the government handed out subsidies to encourage people in rural areas to buy cars.

The China Passenger Car Association predicted this week that vehicle sales in the country would grow 17 percent this year from 2008, outpacing the 6.7 percent rise last year.

26.000 de autovehicule Volvo, rechemate in fabrica din cauza unei defectiuni

Volvo a anuntat ca va rechema in fabrici 26.000 de autovehicule, din pricina unei defectiuni la programul electronic, ce duce la intreruperi ale motorului.

"Este vorba despre un modul electronic care, in anumite circumstante, nu functioneaza cum trebuie. Motorul nu porneste sau se opreste dupa cateva sute de metri", a declarat purtatorul de cuvant al Volvo, Maria Bohlin, potrivit Le Figaro.

Compania a anuntat ca toti clientii vizati de masura vor fi anuntati sa isi aduca masina la o reprezentanta Volvo, pentru ca softul masinii sa fie schimbat.

Vor fi rechemate modelele S80, V70, XC60, XC70 si S80L (vandut numai in china) intre 2008 si 2010. Aceste modele au motor T6 cu sase cilindri. Dintre cele 26.000 de masini rechemate, 12.000 sunt din Statele Unite.

Volvo a mai fost nevoita sa faca schimbari la anumite autovehicule in aprilie, cand 21.000 de modele C30 hatchback, S40 si V50 au fost rechemate in fabrica din pricina unor defectiuni la sistemul de racire.
