Numele Volvo a fost intai inregistrat in 1911 ca firma detinuta de SKF (producatori de rulmenti) pentru a denumi un sector de rulmenti speciali fabricati de firma mama.

Primul automobil Volvo a iesit pe portile fabricii la 14 aprilie 1927 si a fost numit Oppen vagn (Open wagon).

In 1998, divizia Volvo Cars a fost achizitionata de Ford, iar cu banii proveniti din tranzactie, Volvo achizitioneaza sectorul de autovehicule comerciale Renault si producatorii de camioane Mack Trucks din USA.
