  1. The C30, S40 and V50 DRIVe models and the V70 2.5FT and S80 2.5 FT (bioethanol powered) have all been nominated for World Green Car of the Year 2009. The winner will be announced at the New York International Auto Show in April 2009.

    Volvo Cars is the manufacturer with by far the largest number of candidates in the Green Car of the Year 2009 competition. Five models - the Volvo C30 1.6D DRIVe, Volvo S40 1.6D DRIVe, Volvo V50 1.6D DRIVe, Volvo V70 2.5 FT Flexifuel and Volvo S80 2.5 FT Flexifuel - feature in the 22-car line-up.

    Fiat and Mini each have two candidates. The Audi Q7 3.0 TDI, BMW 335d BluePerformance and Mercedes-Benz ML/R/GL 320 BlueTEC are also on the list of candidates.

    The five finalists will be announced in February next year, and by March the jury will have cut this down to three finalists. The winner will be presented on April 9 at the New York International Auto Show.

  2. Prin 2005 eram cu masina in Bucuresti la service si am vazut acolo un Volvo S40 II lovit lateral facut praf de un VW Passat. De atunci am vazut o gramada de Volvo facute praf si nu mai cred acest marketing agresiv de la Volvo care pune accent pe siguranta.

    Iti raspung cu argumentele lui Godfather, in legatura cu alt subiect, sper ca nu se supara  :D :

    Dincolo de toata polemica de pana acum (extrem de constructiva si de utila, de altfel) cineva sa priveasca interiorul lui S40. Masina este gandita sa protejeze viata soferului, nu sa ramana intreaga dupa ce primest eun impact la peste 100 km/h. Deci..interiorul, din ce se distinge din poze, este intact. Restul e poveste. Unghiul din care a intrat, energie cinetica, cauciuc care a amoritzat...explicatiile pot fi cu sutele si tin efectiv de fizica. Masina s-a deformat ca la carte...asadar, inca o stea pt Volvo

    Si cum am mai spus, per ansamblu la masini testate/5 stele primite, Volvo are cel mai bun coeficient:

    Volvo    : la 1.80 masini testate primeste 5 stele (dintr-un nr de 9 masini testate)

    Renault : la 1.84 masini testate primeste 5 stele (dintr-un nr de 24 masini testate)

    Sigur, Renault are mai multe modele testate, insa Volvo face putine si mai bune  ;)


  3. Probabil ca topul de care vorbesti se refera la piata americana si sunt sigur ca despre asta vorbesti. Trebuie sa-ti amintesc ca in SUA nu sunt prezente multe modele europene care ar fi putut concura cu succes Volvo. In europa cred ca Volvo ar fi obtinut un alt rezultat in fata unui A6, BMW S5, E Klasse, Jaguar XF, etc.

     In privinta Renault Megane 3 nu cred ca o comparatie cu XC60 sau Nissan Qashqai este cea mai potrivita. In primul rand ultimele doua sunt SUV-uri iar Megane se incadreaza la clasa compacta.

     Am luat si eu dupa euroncap urmatoarele rezultate:

    - Volvo s40 II - 34 pct adulti ;- 40 pct copii

    - Audi A4 model 2008 - 34 pct adulti;- 41 pct copii (mai bun decat Volvo)

    - BMW Seria 3 - 35 pct adulti ; -39 pct copii ( egal Volvo)

    - Alfa Romeo 159 - 34 pct adulti; - 40 pct copii ( egal Volvo)

    - Citroen C5 - 35 pct adulti; 38 pct - copii (egal Volvo)

    - Renault Laguna - 36 pct adulti; - 41 pct copii (mai bun decat Volvo)

     Deci numai in comparatia asta avem 5 masini mai sigure decat Volvo.

    S40 2004 vs A4 2008, Megane III 2008 etc...nu mi se pare ok comparatia. Adica nu poti compara una din 1990 si una din 2000.

    Masini Testate din 2004  au fost urmatoarele in clasa de mai sus:

    S40 2004, Peugeot 407, Saab 9-3, Toyota Prius si Citroen C5, Toyota si Citroen fiind peste S40. Acum nu mai sunt asa multe.

    In aceeasi categorie cu XC60, din acelasi an 2008 au mai fost testate Renault Koleos si Ford Kuga, ambele sub XC60.

    Ca sa nu mai vb de Volvo XC90 care din 2003 nu este depasita de modele mult mai noi.

    Per ansamblu la masini testate/5 stele primite, Volvo are cel mai bun coeficient.

    Volvo de exemplu din 9 masini testate, 5 au obtinut 5 stele.

    Renault din 24, 13 cu 5 stele

    Mercedes din 13, 6 cu 5 stele

    BMW din 12, 4 cu 5 stele

    Audi din 11, 2 cu 5 stele

    Pentru mine EuroNCAP este o unealta de marketing care da stelute celui care plateste mai mult.

  4. S80 desemnat ca avand cel mai bun interior in gama masinilor Premium in 2007

    In the cars categories, Ward's editors voted the Honda Fit the best interior in Economy-Priced Cars; they also chose the Saturn Aura as best in Popular-Priced Cars; and the Volvo S80 as having the best interior in Premium- Priced Car category.

    Apropo...in aceeasi categorie cu Megane, de fabricatie 2008, doar doar VW Golf 6 a mai fost testat, obtinand 36 puncte la protectia adultilor, cu 1 mai putin ca Megane.

    Oricum din 2009 Februarie se va schimba sistemul de punctare.

    Aaaaa...si uite cum isi testeaza Volvo masinile:

  5. Changan Auto in talks with Ford to buy Volvo

    The top executives of Changan Auto, Ford and Volvo are in talks over Changan's buying of Volvo, reported National Business Daily today, citing an insider from the Chinese automaker.

    At first, during the 2008 Guangzhou auto show last month, Volvo's top executives had long talks with Changan Auto president Xu Liuping, and this has been confirmed by a PR official of Changan Auto, said the report. "There is any possibility," Liu was quoted as saying.

    And then recently when Ford Motor announced its plan to adjust its Volvo strategy, the presidents of Ford Asia Pacific, Ford China, Volvo China met Changan's president in Chongqing, where Changan Auto is headquartered, and they had closed-door talks. It seems that Ford's announcement of the new strategy is closely related to Changan's intention of buying Volvo, said the business newspaper.

    The insider added that it is logical for financially troubled Ford Motor to consider Changan as a possible Chinese partner of its Volvo brand, because they have the Changan Ford Mazda joint venture which is also producing the Volvo S40 and S80 models. Volvo China's top executive has declined to comment on this matter, said the report.

    In another development, the UK's Sunday Mail reported yesterday that Ford has returned to Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. (SAIC) to make another pitch to sell Volvo to the biggest Chinese automaker.

    "The urgent deal between SAIC and Ford also explains the suave reaction of Changan, Ford's joint venture partner in China.   6. Collapsing car sales in the United States forced the Ford Motor Co. to sell off most of its stake in Mazda. Ford needs the money and will get about $540 million for 20 per cent of Mazda which is being bought by a group of Japanese businesses. Ford will be left with about 13 per cent of Mazda but will no longer control the company.

    Both Ford and Mazda have said they'll continue to work closely together but, now that Ford has also announced they're trying to sell Volvo, you can see that the Ford strategy of becoming "One Ford" puts the attention squarely on North America.

  7. China making of Volvo unaffected by brand sale

    Source from Ford (China) Co and Volvo China said production of Volvo cars at Chongqing plant will not be affected by the possible sale of the brand by its US parent.

    Volvo Car's Chinese partner, Changan Ford Mazda Automobile (CFMA) will start production of Volvo S80 next year, and this plan is unlikely to be affected by the change, Volvo China stated.

    CFMA currently make the Volvo S40 at its Chongqing plant in Southwest China. Sales of the China-made car model reached 3,181 units in the Chinese market in the first half of 2008, inching up by 1.4 percent year on year.

    On the other side of the Atlantic, Ford submitted today detailed plans to Congress to ask for loans. In it Ford reaffirmed that it is "exploring strategic alternatives for Volvo" in an effort to help its overall liquidity. 

    A Bloomberg report cites an industry insider as saying Chinese automakers are among possible bidders for the European luxury brand,

    "None of the European manufacturers would have a need or a likely interest in Volvo," said Dennis Virag, president of Automotive Consulting Group in Ann Arbor, Michigan, "The only thing I could see is an Indian company or perhaps a Chinese company."

    But the report also said seven out of 10 Swedes back a temporary government takeover of Gothenburg-based Volvo if Ford can't secure the unit's future.

    Even with tight credit worldwide, Ford could pull off a sale because Volvo would be attractive to automakers in emerging markets such as Tata Motors Limited of India, said Kevin Tynan, an analyst with New York-based Argus Research Corp.

    "There's probably enough money out there for either an emerging market automaker or somebody looking to get a brand with a little bit of cache to it," Tynan said.

    Tata in March purchased Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford for $1.7 billion. The Volvo brand would complement Tata's two luxury brands, Tynan said.

    Ford had considered the sale of Volvo, Land Rover and Jaguar for some time, but, since the latter two were not as intertwined, their sale was less complicated.

  9. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said 72 vehicles earned its “Top Safety Pick†award for 2009, the IIHS said on Tuesday.

    Ford Motor (F) and its Volvo division collected 16 winners, the most of any company, while Honda Motor (HMC) and its Acura division had the second-most with 13.

    The Honda Fit with optional electronic stability control is the first minicar to earn the TSP designation.

    General Motors (GM) and Toyota Motor each had eight vehicles on the list. Chrysler is the only major auto maker without a TSP, the IIHS said.

    The count of 72 TSP winners is more than double the amount from 2008, and triple the number from 2007, the IIHS said. It attributed the gains to increasing inclusion of safety equipment such as standard side airbags and electronic stability control as standard in vehicles.

    Car makers “have beefed up the side structures of vehicles and added side airbags to do a better job of protecting people in serious side crashes," IIHS president Adrian Lund said in the press release announcing the awards. "They're rapidly adding ESC to prevent crashes, and they're designing seats and head restraints that do a better job of protecting against whiplash."

  10. Baieti, eu am fost prezent la ceea ce vroiam sa fie prima mea intalnire cu cativa pasionati de volvo dar asta e, altii ca mine n-au mai avut cand sa intre astazi pe net si sa citeasca ca defapt s-a amanat...intrasem in fiecare zi sa citesc amanunte, dar, azi nu, ghinionul meu.

    Am plecat val vartej de la facultate, cu ingrijorarea ca nu voi bifa prezenta la seminar, dar nu se compara cu emotiile care le aveam si nerabdarea de a va intalni pe voi.

    Am fugit repede acasa, am luat-o pe mama, si am plecat spre Bucuresti.

    Intrasem chiar in criza de timp, puteam sa fac apoplexie fisturizata din cauza ca nu voi ajunge la timp...

    La 18.50 am ajuns in Piata George Enescu, si am vazut acel minunat XC60 care statea ca un cocostarc pe rampa aceea. In sfarsit "va gasisem", dupa aglomeratia care ma tinuse in loc prin oras.

    Intrat in parcarea amenajata pt Volvo, m-am uitat dupa voi, dar era pustiu...ma gandisem ca am ajuns prea tarziu, si ati plecat, dar, intr-un tarziu, vad cortul acela mare ( ochii imi erau atintiti asupra celor 2 XC60 si '' nu mai vedeam nimic altceva in jurul meu" ), din el auzinduse cateva voci si-am inceput sa tremur de emotii, stiind ca sigur veti fi acolo.

    Cand intru timid inauntru, nu vad decat 1 baiat si 2 fete. Ma apropii de ei, ma prezint, le zic motivul pt care sunt acolo si surpriza...nu stiau despre ce vorbeam.

    Il sun pe Alexu...si aflu de la el ca intalnirea s-a amanat  :'(

    Am fost bucuros totusi ca cei de acolo au fost draguti si m-au condus la acel XC60 care era cu "picioarele" pe pamant. Mi-au spus ca pot sa ma urc in el...arata super, mai frumos ca in poze!

    Am facut si cateva poze cu "suspendatul", postez una dintre ele.

    In rest ce sa mai zic, greseala mea ca n-am citit astazi forumul, nu? Asta e.............

  11. Volvo has reportedly confirmed plans to build a performance-oriented version of its C30 hatchback. Since the demise of the S60R and V70R, Volvo hasn’t had an R-badged model geared toward driving enthusiasts. While Volvo might forgo the “R†designation for some new nomenclature, this vehicle will be, for all intents and purposes, a C30R.

    Volvo officials told U.K. magazine Autocar the über C30 will deliver over 300 horsepower and feature all-wheel-drive. (Recent rumors have indicated Volvo might deliver as much as 350 hp). Production will be limited to 4500 units over four years.

    The car’s powerplant will be borrowed from the Ford Focus RS — that’s a 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder if you’re wondering. Other highlights will include 20-inch wheels and color-keyed brake calipers.

    There’s speculation the launch will be linked to the British Touring Car Championship, with a front-wheel-drive iteration of the C30R running on ethanol fuel.

  12. Volvo’s extensive experience of designing and developing cars suitable for drivers that tow has again been acknowledged in this year’s Caravan Club Towcar of the Year Competition results, announced yesterday.

    The Volvo V70 D5 AWD secured victory in the ‘Over 1800kg All-Wheel Drive’ category, beating rivals from Land Rover, Jeep, Toyota, Mitsubishi and Kia.

    Judges praised the V70’s six speed automatic transmission, which made it an “exemplary towcarâ€, as well as its overall levels of refinement. Naturally, being an estate car, the V70 was deemed to be a good load carrier and remained poised and level with a caravan hitched up.

    The powerful 2.4-litre D5 turbodiesel engine provides a winning combination of high performance and torque levels in a spacious estate car package. The D5 engine delivers 185 PS and comes with a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed Geartronic transmission. Geartronic models can return up to 34.9mpg on the combined fuel economy cycle and achieve a top speed of 130mph.

    Meanwhile, the Advance Haldex All-Wheel Drive system with Instant Tractionâ„¢ has an electronic management system that constantly monitors the speed of the wheels and throttle, engine torque and the brakes. As driving conditions change, wheels with the best grip get the most power.

    Chris Wailes, product manager at Volvo Car UK Ltd, said: “We are delighted to win another Caravan Club Towcar of the Year award as they are a great recognition of Volvo's commitment to developing good towcars and carry a great deal of respect from the public and our retailers.â€

    This award builds on Volvo’s previous success at the Caravan Club Towcar of the Year competitions, the 2007 Awards saw the Volvo V50 D5 Sport not only win the ‘£25,001 to £33,000’ price class but it was also named the overall winner of the competition. The previous year the 185 PS variant of the Volvo D5 turbodiesel engine powered the XC70 AWD and V70 AWD to victory in no less than three classes.

    Volvo’s commitment to building great towcars is well known. It performs gruelling towing tests for all its new models both in Sweden and the desert heat of Arizona, USA, and even has its own fleet of trailers and caravans which are towed by vehicles steered using advanced robot technology to ensure consistent testing methodology. This testing also includes measuring the lateral acceleration of the trailer and the angle between the car and trailer at different speeds so that steering forces, chassis settings and engines are tuned to optimise their performance when towing.

    Car manufacturers Volvo are now using scientific findings about the African Locust to improve road safety. Volvo hopes to be able to transpose the locust's unique characteristics onto a computer chip and use it in their car's safety system.

    If the system of the locust can be re-created, it would revolutionize pedestrian/vehicle safety.
